This exclusive Mixcloud Select mix is a small tribute to this great and humble man who has inspired many, many people worldwide including myself.
Growing up in the 70’s in South Africa, I listened to the radio all the time (we only got TV in about 1976!) .
This mix, compiled mostly from old vinyl singles, features some of the songs I heard on the radio between 1973 and 1978. Most of them are obscure, and didn’t chart, but I remember them all with great fondness.
The Vagabond Jazz & Blues Show – 14 September 2016
On the 4th of October 2012, at age 53, I started something new in my life, presenting a two-hour blues show on the then brand new internet radio station, All Jazz Radio. Despite my reluctance founder Eric Alan encouraged me to give it a go, and here we are four years later!
As my father said recently; “you are just making mixtapes like you always did when you were a teenager, except now the technology has changed, and you are getting to share your love and passion for music with other people.”
I play an eclectic mix of Jazz & Blues, with a special focus on South African artists.
I call the show “The Vagabond Jazz & Blues Show“ because I wander around the world of music picking up scraps of information from all over and everywhere.
A trashy, sleazy mix of South African flavours including a bit of psychobilly, some ska, a touch of punk, a dash of raw garage sounds and a whole lot more. Artists include Martin Rocka, Snotkop, The Psycho Reptiles, The Dolly Rockers, Scabby Annie, Them Tornados, The Rag Dolls, Peachy Keen, 7th Son, Corsette and others.
